claude is melancholic at the end bc this is like right after hurting his friend after his Toxic Spider Freak Accident so he swears to like stay away from other humans/anything, really so he doesn't inadvertently cause any more accidents again. No matter how much it hurts

so even tho he sees this bright-faced pianist he knows he'll never be able to see her concert. he'll always be on the outside, listening in on the echoes of her music from the outskirts, and that's it.

so the fact that he's an Entire Universe away, listening to that music right in front of him - albeit a little clumsier, it's so beautiful because it's real and there and right in front of him. it's more than just a 'catchy tune' now, it's memories/remnants of his home.

and it hits him then that he has to go back home: even though it hurts, even though he's alienated from his own universe because of that one fateful spider bite.

also he didn't know web-penguin's name before, so when she starts playing that tune it HITS him all at once: Oh Shit this is petra gurin.

earth-0122 is claude's universe and thats his bday lol teehee... (so this current world we're on is earth-1204)

petra-0122 is a sweet and shy pianist who suddenly bust into the spotlight and she's not sure how much she likes the attention - she'd rather be a faceless player tbh but also seeing how happy she makes the world she shyly accepts the fame. i think earth-0122 is kinda 'dark', pretty dangerous id say, kinda like the world we see at the end of atsv, so petra gurin is a beacon of hope.

the same way that web-penguin is a beacon of hope for spiderclaw, in part to her refreshing naivete and optimism (she encourages him to sing bc she gets the feeling that he likes it, even if he's not confident in it, she heartily pushes him to Just do it!!!)

the lab that they're infiltrating is theoretically the lab that had the antarctic spider that bit petra, and they're looking for clues to get claude home. Or something

ALSO! i thnk the idea of That Song not existing on earth-1204 is very poignant.... idk TO ME PERSONALYL The idea of art Not Existing bc of Something just aches and hurts me viscerally. and in this case its bc petra in this universe is spiderman. so she never was able to become a pianist (which theoretically was her dream.) Ohhhhhhhhhh YEOOWCHHHH and more than that she's oblivious to the idea that she COULD HAVE been this amazing world-renown pianist, she just brushes it off as "ohh just another dream that didn't pan out for me" OW OW OW OWOWOWOWOWOW

i think after this scene she brushes it off as "haha just a little improv!" while claude is like doubling over and shes like (ALARMED) IT WAS THAT BAD? DAMN BRO SORRY I HAVENT TOUCHED A PIANO IN 5 YEARS

ALSO now after this it hits him that "oh shit that means there's a claude clawmark in this universe too" and then it REALLY sinks in that he has to go home. This is not his world and it never will be.

But in that singular moment he feels a wistful sense of longing: what if i could stay?

but that's selfish too. he's "less cautious" in petra's world bc it's not His. aka if he ends up hurting/killing anybody, well, who can blame a person who isnt even supposed to exist...? i think the idea of mr. cleric turning from a selfless, responsible individual to a self-serving man is very fun... in any universe....

I CAN STILL CHANGE THE END (spider-woman!vi x spider-woman!reader)

LET'S DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY THIS TIME....her name is violet lanes. she was bitten by a radioactive spider and for the past 10 years, she's been the one and only ghost-spider spider-woman ! she joined a band, saved the city, fell in love, saved the city again, graduated college, argued with her sister (teenagers are the worst), moved in with her girlfriend in hopes of saving their relationship, got into grad school, broke her leg (do not text and swing, regardless of how late you are for an anniversary dinner), saved the city some more, maybe too much, but couldn't save the love of her life.

no matter how many hits she takes, no matter how much guilt she carries, vi always, always, gets back up, even if it's hard to keep fighting when she's lost so much.

and.....she's not the only one.

(spoiler alert: you're the one and only spider-woman until an alternate version of your dead ex-girlfriend crashes a double date and introduces you to the chaos of the multiverse.... and maybe reintroduces the possibility of a happy ending, however doomed it may be.)

i. mercury in retrograde — violet lanes adjusts to a different reality; a new team of supervillains wreaks havoc around new york; and you just really need a nap, honestly, but you have a thesis to write, a city to protect, and a ghost-spider to deal with.

ii. agent of chaos, angel of death — you and vi start to appreciate not having to shoulder the responsibility of spider-woman alone. hoping to find her a way back home, the two of you visit oscorp and make some sinister discoveries; mj agrees to let vi fill in as the band’s drummer, but your show is cut short by unwanted guests; and you’re once again faced with the reality that you can’t save everyone.

iii. in the web that is our own, we begin again — in every other universe, violet lanes falls for spider-woman. it never ends well. but, there’s a first time for everything, right? you and vi indulge in fantasies of what your lives would have been if you met under different circumstances; the two of you save the multiverse before harry osborn can make his daddy issues everyone’s problem; and an inevitable goodbye isn’t as final as it may seem.

your friends had been begging you for weeks to come to some birthday bash one of their friends we’re having, you always ignored the question, knowing how your boyfriend was. no, he’s not controlling or anything. he just wants you to be safe. he doesn’t really like you being out alone, especially at night and how dangerous the city is. but you didn’t want to let your friends down.

so here you are, getting ready to go to a party.

you haven’t spoken to miles since earlier today, he said he had some stuff to handle and you just left it at that, knowing how he gets when you question him. this was all kind of perfect, he was busy so he wouldn’t be worried about you. for now at least.

it didn’t take you long to get ready, throwing on a random dress and some sneakers to go along with it. you scrolled through your phone, waiting for your friends to finish getting ready. once they finally were, you all made your way out the house and began to walk to the party, gladly it wasn’t far, knowing how these streets were. you all reached the party after ten minutes of walking. you could hear the music blasting before you even reached the door, some people stood outside mingling as the three of you approached the door, your friend opening it. the house was packed. people talking and dancing, the music being even louder than before, flashing strobe lights? a bit extra, but fun you suppose.

as soon as you stepped in the door, your friends were pulling you to dance with them. you really had two left feet but you still danced anyways, enjoying yourself and the moment you were having with them. you all talked with each other, took pictures, and danced for hours. but now you were tired, and thirsty. you excuse yourself from your friends, and squeezed past people to get to the kitchen, you pushed the kitchen door open where you found some water bottles on a counter, you cracked the bottle open and leaned against the counter as you chugged it down.

“hey—”

“shit!” you jumped, almost spitting your water out, “sorry, i didn’t mean to scare you.” the stranger, who was standing way too close laughs.

“can you back up?!” you look at the little space in between the two of you.

the boy throws his hands up in defense and backs up from you, a smug look on his face. you rolled your eyes, already seeing where this was going.

“i saw you dancing earlier, you’re pretty good.” he says.

“i guess.” you shrug. this man was lying straight to your face; you were a terrible dancer.

“would you like to dance?”

“i have a boyfriend.” you shook your head.

“one dance won’t hurt.” he says, slowly making his way back over towards you, “plus, i don’t see him here.”

“turn around then.”

the familiar voice startled the boy. hell, it even startled you a little too. the boy turned around, revealing miles standing by the door, a mug on his face–along with a few cuts.

“look, i don’t want any trouble man.” the boy says, “you should’ve thought about that before you approached my girl.” miles says.

“i-i didn’t know.” he began to stutter, “i literally just told–” you started.

“i got this.” miles glares over at you before snatching the boy up by his collar, “if you go near her, if i see you talking to her, if i even see you looking at her…just know i’m not going as easy on you as i did tonight.” he threatened, “now get outta here before i beat your ass.” he finally let the boy go, who immediately ran out the kitchen.

“miles–”

“let’s go.” he grabs your hand, pulling you out the kitchen.

“miles! i could’ve handled that!” you yelled over the music.

he just ignored you, continuing to pull you out the party. finally, you two reached outside where you pulled your hand from his.

“what did i tell you about being out so late?” he didn’t yell, he never yelled at you but his voice was stern.

“i was just trying to have fun.” you muttered as you two continued to walk.

“and look where that got you.”

he was right. but it wasn’t your fault people were so damn weird.

before you could even blink, he was standing in front of you, stopping your from walking. you refused to look at him, even when he tilted your chin up.

“look at me.” he says and you roll your eyes over to meet his, “i’m not tryna control your life or anything like that, you’re just one of the few people i actually care about, i can’t lose you. i just wanna make sure you’re safe, ma.”

“i know.”

“so don’t go out all late without me, aight?” it sounds like a question but he’s not really asking you, he’s telling you.

“i hear you, miles.” you playfully role your eyes.

“you better.” he jokes (but not really) quickly stealing a kiss from your lips.

you two start walking again, this time with miles’s arm around you.

“can we talk about what happened to your face now?” you ask.

“nah, but we can talk about how pretty that dress looks on you.”

"(L/N)." A familiar voice calls out to you.

"Miguel-!" You cheer, happily turning over to your "boss". Jumping over to hug him happily. "Wow! You look amazing! New outfit and hair- oh!" You pause your ranting as he pushes you off. Lyla eagerly returning you words as her holographic form floats around you.

"Oh! Miguel! I want you to meet my partner." You turn your attention away from them.

He blinks. What did you mean-?

A huge body appears from beyond the shadows. Stalking over to your side, his mask glaring down at the other spider, his arm muscles flex as they cross disapprovingly at them.

"This is my partner! Isn't he a dreamboat?" You say allowed, hyping up the tall male.

"Huh... Yeah, real emphases on boat huh..." Lyla remarks, as she leans near, as you wrap an arm around Bruce.

"I know right! He's strong like one!" You cheer, as he grunts apathetically at the comment Lyla gave. You smile cheekily as Miguel merely hums, no longer focused on bat-themed hero. He looks to his watch as he types in a few things.

" 'B'?" Lyla asks.

"Yeah!"

Miguel mutters curse's over his breath when realizing where the watch had brought him too.
